Galaxy Express 999
Last Saturday, I saw a musical for the first time in a long time. It was my friend’s birthday, so several of us went to go see her favorite former Takarazuka actress in a musical production of 「銀河鉄道999」, called “Galaxy Express 999” in English.
I’ve known about the Galaxy Express 999 series for a long time, but I’ve never read or watched it. The story was a bit confusing, but I read the Wikipedia page during the play’s intermission and understood more of it!
It was the play’s opening night, so there were a few actor and technical mistakes, but it was still very enjoyable. The sets were very dynamic and interesting, and there was a lot of use of projection screens to simulate things like galaxies and the cockpits of space ships and so on. I definitely enjoyed the effects and it was nice to see how visual technology is advancing in the theater, as well!
At the end of the production, Galaxy Express 999’s creator Leiji Matsumoto came out on stage with the cast. He was very talkative and the actors had a tough time getting him to give the microphone back, which was amazingly funny. I’m happy I got to see such a living legend!
All in all I really enjoyed the production even only knowing one actress (Kaname Ouki, who played Emereldas) and I think I’m going to try watching the original anime sometime!
